CHICAGO – Scontri alla manifestazione di protesta contro il vertice Nato di Chicago. Al termine di un corteo che domenica 20 maggio si era snodato pacificamente per la metropoli dell’Illinois, un gruppo di contestatori ha tentato di sfondare il cordone di sicurezza eretto a pochi isolati da McCormick Place, il centro congressi che ospita il summit. Lo hanno riferito fonti della polizia locale. Una decina di manifestanti sono stati ammanettati e portati via e almeno altri tre hanno riportato ferite alla testa.
I disordini sono scoppiati al termine della manifestazione, quando i poliziotti con gli elmetti blu e in tenuta antisommossa hanno fissato un ultimatum a centinaia di attivisti che si rifiutavano di lasciare la zona. Ci sono stati momenti di tensione, con alcuni giovane che scandivano slogan come “Chiudere la Nato”, e poi una carica degli agenti che hanno portato via diversi attivisti tenendoli per mani e piedi. Il corte, durante il quale attivisti vestiti di nero hanno lanciato bottigliette d’acqua contro gli agenti, era organizzato tra gli altri dalla Coalizione contro Nato e G8.

Subito dopo l’apertura del vertice avvenuta sabato 19 maggio, alcuni reporter indipendenti hanno denunciato di essere stati seguiti da dodici auto della polizia mentre rientravano a casa. I reporter sono stati fermati, brutalmente tirati fuori dalle auto, perquisiti e interrogati. La polizia avrebbe anche sequestrato i loro hard drive e cancellato tutte le immagini registrate.
