BANGKOK (THAILANDIA) – Migliaia di thailandesi si sono riversati in strada a Bangkok per dare un saluto a re Bhumibol Adulyadej che compie 85 anni. In una delle sue rare apparizioni in pubblico, il monarca si è mostrato seduto su un trono davanti a una folla di 200mila persone, e ha pronunciato un breve discorso sull’armonia nazionale. Gran parte delle persone scese in piazza sono vestite di giallo, il colore reale. Molte inoltre sventolano bandiere thailandesi e con l’insegna reale.
La grande affluenza è una dimostrazione vivida dell’affetto che la popolazione prova per il re, nonostante i tumulti degli ultimi anni, che hanno sollevato dubbi sul futuro della monarchia. Per parte della sua apparizione pubblica, il monarca è stato affiancato da membri della sua famiglia, tra i quali il principe ereditario Vajiralongkorn, suo figlio e probabile successore.
