I Love Arctic CanadaROMA – Ieri 22 aprile è stata l’Earth Day, la Giornata della Terra, un’iniziativa nata negli Stati Uniti nel 1970 e che punta a coinvolgere un miliardo di persone nel mondo. Greenpeace ha diffuso le immagini della giornata mondiale di mobilitazione per l’Artico: oltre 10 mila persone per formare uno striscione umano con scritto “I ♥ Arctic” in circa 280 città del mondo.
Da Buenos Aires a Bangkok, da Copenhagen a Johannesburg, le persone hanno chiesto ai leader politici di proteggere il fragile ecosistema Artico. Sabato a Roma un grande cuore è stato formato da attivisti e simpatizzanti di Greenpeace al Circo Massimo. Le immagini di “I ♥ Arctic” saranno ora raccolte in un libro che verrà consegnato ai Ministri degli esteri dei Paesi della regione artica che si riuniranno a maggio al Consiglio Artico a Kiruna, in Svezia. “Milioni di persone chiedono che gli incontaminati ghiacci artici vengano protetti da un divieto totale di trivellazione petrolifera nell’Oceano Artico. La nostra dipendenza dai combustibili fossili è erroneamente associata con il progresso e la prosperità, invece porta con sé la distruzione dell’ambiente e dell’economia. Un’altra strada è possibile e i nostri leader politici devono intraprenderla ora” afferma Kumi Naidoo, direttore esecutivo di Greenpeace International.
“Appena una settimana fa siamo rientrati dalla spedizione al Polo Nord, durante la quale abbiamo sperimentato in prima persona la fragile bellezza artica. Vedere questa mobilitazione mondiale mi riempie di gratitudine e speranza. Ora è tempo per i partecipanti al Consiglio Artico di ascoltare queste migliaia di persone e creare un Santuario globale” ha commentato Josefina Skerk, un’attivista indigena membro del Parlamento Sami. Josefina è uno dei quattro giovani ambasciatori artici appena tornati dalla spedizione di Greenpeace al Polo Nord, per portare i nomi dei quasi tre milioni di firmatari della petizione savethearctic.org e una Bandiera per il Futuro sul fondale del Polo Nord.
