UK’s ‘Abu Ghraib’ Site Of Systematic Abuse, Iraqi Civilians Claim
Brutal footage of Iraqi prisoners allegedly being abused at a secret British military interrogation center that has since been nicknamed “UK’s Abu Ghraib” emerged today during high court proceedings, the BBC is reporting.
Soldiers acting on behalf of more than 220 Iraqi civilians submitted the video, which is believed to have been shot in either 2003 or 2004. The prisoners allege that regular abuse took place over a period of just over five years — from March 2003 to December 2008. According to the Guardian, sexual abuse, food, water and sleep deprivation are among the accusations, along with prolonged solitary confinement, mock executions and being denied appropriate clothing.
A Ministry of Defence (MoD) spokesman told the BBC that a team had been formed to investigate the claims, rather than a public inquiry.
