Footage of anti-government demonstrations throughout Syria has emerged on YouTube.
The amateur clips have surfaced just as Syria ended a near half-century of emergency rule Tuesday, showing mass protests in the city of Homs, as well as the sound of gunshots as security forces open fire. Later clips show the eerily quiet streets in one of the Homs’ main shopping areas on Tuesday, followed by somber scenes of what is said to be funeral service.
“They don’t want to admit there’s a Syrian revolution,” one protester who took to the streets tells the Associated Press. “The people are not interested in small changes here and there anymore.”
