Prenatal Smoking and SIDS

Smoking in pregnancy is a problem.  It is estimated that 13% of pregnant women smoke.  While it’s long been known that smoking in pregnancy, and second hand smoke, can cause low birthweight in the baby, preterm birth and placental problems, the risks of Sudden Infant Death or SIDS has largely been glossed over.  While SIDS does get a mention in prenatal smoking risk factors, it’s just never seemed as “up there” as the other risks.
