WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama switches on his formidable fundraising machine Thursday before a hometown crowd in Chicago, starting a money chase that could reach astronomical sums against reinvigorated Republicans determined to deny him a second term.

Obama speaks at three evening events that are his first fundraisers since he formally announced his campaign for re-election last week. They come a day after the president laid down the terms of the debate in an economic speech in which he accused Republicans of embracing a “deeply pessimistic” view of America.
