First Lady Michelle Obama on Thursday penned a letter offering advice to parents coping with the difficult task of consoling their children in the aftermath of the shootings in Tucson.

In the message, Obama says that both she and the president are “shocked and heartbroken” by the incident, and that she understands the complex nature of the questions posed to parents in the wake of the “unspeakable tragedy.” The First Lady then urges parents to respond to these questions with lessons about the “character of our country, about the values we hold dear, and about finding hope at a time when it seems far away.”

“We can teach our children that here in America, we embrace each other, and support each other, in times of crisis,” Obama writes. “And we can help them do that in their own small way – whether it’s by sending a letter, or saying a prayer, or just keeping the victims and their families in their thoughts.”
