A rancorous Chicago school board meeting last night ended with the approval of five new charter schools and a new magnet school, as hundreds of residents demonstrated outside.

The UNO Charter School Network brought 800 bright yellow scarves to give to supporters in front of the Chicago Public Schools headquarters Wednesday. By 5:15 a.m., five hours before the meeting time, advocates and detractors of charter schools were gathering at the building; by 9 in the morning, UNO had run out of scarves, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Dueling chants for charter schools and neighborhood schools — which proponents see as an alternative to charters, without what essentially amounts to privatization — echoed through the downtown streets throughout the morning.
